About

The Argus is a digital portal to photojournalism, founded by Griffith University staff and students in 2008. The magazine is updated monthly with photographic essays, series and singles with text and video, forging the new wave of Australian photojournalism. As a Queensland College of Art initiative, editorial and publication roles are met by an annual flux of new students. With a photographic focus from contributors and editors alike, the team works alongside renowned photojournalists, Heather Faulkner, Jack Picone and Margaret Waller to ensure a rich visual insight to global affairs. This year, the Argus has featured the rare and compelling work of guest photojournalists for each issue.

In ancient Greek mythology, Argus was a watchman with one hundred eyes, even as he slept, his eyes stayed alert to the world around him.

KRISTAL ABBOTT

Managing Editor

As a student, art was my favorite subject. On graduating year 12 and having works in exhibition I wanted to follow it as my vocation and was naturally drawn to photography. After traveling through parts of Thailand and Indonesia I knew wanted to peruse a career in Photojournalism. I love capturing moments and telling stories with my images that most people don’t get the chance to see. At present I am in my final year studying ePhotojournalism at Griffith University.

Sub Editor

Graduating from High school I saw my life path as a visual artist until I was given my first SLR camera. Already in a Bachelor of Journalism, I quickly changed my major to ePhotography to follow my new passion. Growing up with my mother dragging me along to rallies and telling me everyone deserves equality, I decided I wanted to show people the courage of people who fight for a better world.

I am now in my final semester and am excited about finding the wonders of the world and seeing everything there is to see and sharing in it with a world.

Assignment Editor

I enrolled in the Bachelor of Journalism in 2008 expecting to graduate as a writing journalist three years later. Half way through my second year, however, I decided to incorporate my love of film photography into a career and began majoring in Photojournalism (with a digital camera, of course).  I didn’t regret my decision, as the courses led me to documenting the lives such as sex workers and the homeless.

Now in my last semester, I have recently returned from the January 2012 Griffith Photojournalism trip with an even greater motivation to continue social documentation and photojournalism.

NATHALIE REINHOLDTSEN

Director of Photography

Ever since I was a litle girl I could sit for hours and hours and look at pictures. That is when I discovered my interest for photography. I wanted to learn everything about it, how to use a camera, how to catch the perfect moment, and I wanted to share it with everyone. I wanted to become a photographer.

I am originally from Norway and I have studied photography in practise for two years at Norwegian School Of Creative Studies. There, I learned how to shoot fashion, advertising, portraits, food, documentary and art. My heart lies in portraits and fashion. But I wanted to learn more and get a wider aspect, give documentary a chance, and combine my skills to something bigger.

This is why I choosed to finish my bachelors degree in ePhotojournalism at QCA, Griffith University, Gold Coast.

NATALIE ELHOLM

Deputy of Photography

I am originally from Norway, where I studied photography for two years, learning different aspects of the practise – commercial, fashion, interior, food, portraits, news and documentary. In my last assignment in Norway I documented the FIS Nordic World Ski Championship in Oslo 2011. I developed an interest for telling stories of people, events and our society.

I enrolled in Digital Media at Griffith University to learn how to improve my visual language skills and professional communication with my viewers. With my interest in social documentary and travelling, I want to reflect truth to the audience. I believe this is the only ethical way we can change the world and voice the stories of those who can’t be heard.

ASHLEIGH JANSEN

Deputy of Photography

After deferring university last year, I went on a solo-backpacking journey across Europe, spending the majority of my time in Eastern Europe and Turkey. This allowed me to view the ‘real’ world first hand, further igniting my interest in Photography and my field of study – Photojournalism. Experiencing and immersing myself in other cultures, as well as bearing witness to tense political and social upheavals, helped me to recognise that Photojournalism is exactly the right career path for me.

ZOE KORIS

Director of Marketing

After being introduced to photography by my Dad when I was younger, it sparked a drive. And although it started out as only a hobby, it soon became a strong passion that constantly encouraged me to go out and find the beauty and intrigue in the world around me.

However originally, I limited myself to shooting local bands and young skateboarders, but soon after beginning my course in ePhotojournalism, has driven me to diving deeper and more intimately to my community, and to others around me.

Deputy Marketing Editor

As a young girl i was always inspired by photographs. In my final years of high school i bought myself my first DSLR and began to pursue this aspiration by photographing pretty much anything and everything. I decided that i wanted to take my photography skills further so i enrolled in this ephotojournalism course. Being in my third and final year now, i have a completely different view on photography. I love it more then ever and cannot wait to explore the world through my lens.
