Our right to know: Assange

Julian Assange’s address to Melbourne supporters on 10th February has offered some explanation for the events of his arrest and possible extradition to Sweden, according to AAP.

“For the Internet generation this is our challenge and this is our time,” Assange said.
“We support a cause that is no more radical a proposition than that the citizenry has a right to scrutinise the state.
“The state has asserted its authority by shrivelling, monitoring and regimenting all of us, all the while hiding behind cloaks of security and opaqueness.
“Surely it was only a matter of time before citizens pushed back and we asserted our rights.”

AAP noted the significant releases of the “US rules of engagement for Iraq, Nato’s Afghan war plans and details of tactics used by the US at its Guantanamo Bay terrorist prison” have caused some of the greatest attention. Individually the release of the video footage of a US Military helicopter attack on civilians in Iraq has been the most damaging.
Assange has received many death threats some of which have been gratuitously aired by American media outlets. The other perhaps more pressing concern for Assange is
“current efforts to extradite him to Sweden to answer rape allegations are really meant to secure his transfer to America” reported AAP.

He might be keeping his spirits up by dressing smart and sporting a new hair cut. Works for me!
