October 2010

A Contract of Care

Story by Rebecca Taylor

Despite growing up in Saudi Arabia and residing in America in her youth, Nemat now calls Australia home. She lives here with her three children, working as a registrar in the Gold Coast Hospital ER ward and studying to further her career. Many of the difficult changes she has been through, she says, were for the sake of her children; she wants them to have a life full of joy and opportunity.

A friend of mine told me about Nemat’s journey and the impact it had on her life. Upon meeting Nemat in person, I could see straight away that she was the type of person that you would be fortunate to have in your life. Getting to know her and listening to her share about her life was an absolute privilege. I wanted others to be inspired by her story, but more than that, I wanted to give her the chance to tell it.

This story is a result of the collaborative work with the ABC Open Project.
