June 2011

Brisbane Slut Walk

On the 28th of May this year, women and supporting men all over South-East Queensland grouped together in the Brisbane CBD to protest against the suggestion that rape can be directly linked to what a woman wears. The protest was made in order to point out that women should be allowed to wear whatever they like without being victimised. Many people involved in the walk dressed up in their “sluttiest” clothes in order to drive home this point.

“Slut walks” have been taking place in cities worldwide after a Toronto Police officer stated that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised” on January 24th this year. The walk started in King George Square and proceeded through several blocks of the Brisbane CBD to the Queens Gardens on the corner of Elizabeth and George St where it ended.
