June 2011

Nimbin Mardigrass 2011

The long drive to Nimbin makes for a bumpy trip back in time. The annual festival attracts thousands of tourists, artists, and musicians from all over the world to partake in festivities and smoke their peace pipes in protest against the illegalisation of marijuana. Some of the popular attractions include joint rolling competitions, bong throwing, comedy acts, vintage kombi procession and political discussions about the laws of illegalisation. This year the police upped the ante with the antidrug campaign bringing in sniffer dogs, breath test stops, and over 50 officers more than the usual 10 or so, causing many complaints of intimidation and reduced business as a result.
